Margaret Tucker Hostel for Young Aboriginal Women

Margaret Tucker Hostel provides supported crisis accommodation services and support to young Aboriginal women aged 15-18 years who are homeless or at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

We have a bungalow for young mums with infants or young pregnant women.

The Hostel provides a culturally holistic approach to the young women.

We provide:

  • Culturally safe environment

  • Accommodation and Meals

  • Case Management

  • Referrals to housing, health, legal, education, employment and training.

  • Promote self-care and wellbeing

  • Practical assistance with living skills. and personal development

  • Art and craft activities.

  • Follow up support after you leave the Hostel

The Hostel was named after Margaret Tucker a respected leader and activist for Aboriginal rights.

Aunty Marge, was an actress, who starred in films, “ Lousy Little Sixpence” and “Women of the Sun”An accomplished author whose Biography “If Everyone Cared” is as poignant today as when she wrote it.

A survivor of the Stolen Generation, with a beautiful singing voice. Aunty Marge was awarded MBE in 1968.

Margaret Tucker Hostel strives to promote independence through life skill development, education, work and training opportunities to encourage confidence in young women to reach their full potential.

These bum bags and toiletry bags were made by our residents as part of the arts and crafts activities we run occasionally. The bum bags were made for individuals and the toiletry bags were made for future residents as a welcoming gift.

The art installation is "Her Loving hands" a Group art project by our young women was exhibited at Black Dot Art Gallery, Brunswick, 2019.

The Victorian Aboriginal Honour Roll recognises the achievements of inspirational Aboriginal people who have made an important contribution to their community and the state of Victoria.

Several of the recipients of this award including Aunty Walda Blow, Aunty Eleanor Harding and Aunty Clara Luttrell-Garisou, who are three of our Life Members, have all had an association with the Margaret Tucker Hostel over the years. Some recipients continue as association with the hostel today.
